Green Chimneys School: A Parent’s Perspective by Fay Casatuta

October 28, 2016

All of our children are different and need different things as they grow and mature. As the parents of a special needs son, we understand this well. The daily challenges we face often seem insurmountable and can be exhausting; they often feel like a moving target as our children navigate through the world. We found those challenges compounded by the search for the right school that “fit” our son’s strengths and weaknesses. After years in the traditional option of Catholic school and a short stint in public school, we finally found Green Chimneys and haven’t turned back.

We have found a home in Green Chimneys that will forever be part of our family. Everyone is so welcoming—from the teachers, social workers, medical staff, dorm staff, and more! They “get” our son, they “get” our family struggles, all while providing a structured yet nurturing environment for our son to grow.

Our son will graduate from high school in June 2017 prepared to face the next set of challenges adulthood brings. We have seen him grow so very much since entering Green Chimneys’ doors at the end of 8th grade as a child seeking to belong, into the mature and responsible young man he now is. The love, commitment, friendships, and hard work of the Green Chimneys team have made this possible! We are forever indebted to Green Chimneys for guiding our son, supporting our family, working as a team with us, and introducing us to so many other families dealing with our same struggles.
