For nearly 20 years Swiss Re has partnered with Green Chimneys to bring hope and healing to children suffering from mental health and developmental challenges through innovative animal assisted and nature based therapies.
Our Special Education School and Residential Treatment Center, located on a farm and wildlife center in Brewster, NY provides academic and therapeutic programming while partnering with our rescued animals and wildlife who help children develop valuable life and relationship skills and empathy through assisting in their care.
Throughout the entire pandemic, the extraordinary professionals at Green Chimneys continue to provide effective programming and reinforce the therapeutic goals for both the day students those in residential treatment. For those students who did not reside on campus, their Clinical staff remained in contact with their families and provided support, advice, and counseling via phone and video conferencing. Meanwhile, our teachers transitioned to virtual learning in the Spring of 2020 and successfully continued providing the excellent education that our students need. Fortunately, in the Summer of 2020, our students returned to campus for in-person classes with a focus on their safety. Finally, the farm and wildlife center staff has kept the animals fed, exercised, and safe.

In March of 2019, Green Chimneys received a call from the Department of Environmental Conservation regarding an injured Bald Eagle. Examination revealed that the eagle’s elbow joint was shattered, and Green Chimneys vowed to rehabilitate the bird. While once hopeful that the eagle could be released, further assessment has indicated that the damage to its wing means that it can no longer live safely in the wild. Green Chimneys is proud to be one of the few places in New York State that has the proper licenses and permits required to rehabilitate and care for Bald Eagles.
