Day camp staff bring heart and creativity to their work with kids

Chris, Head of Specialists

When was your first Green Chimneys Summer Camp summer?

I came to Green Chimneys Summer Camp in the summer of 2012 as a Counselor in Training (C.I.T). I had no idea what I was getting myself into at the time but was up for the adventure. Eight years later, I have to say coming to this camp was one of the greatest decisions of my life.

How did that first job at camp make you feel?

Camp made me feel like I was living in fantasy land. When people talk about their first jobs they usually talk about working in a boring store somewhere in the area. I, on the other hand, get to say I worked as a pirate or a Jedi depending on the theme week. Getting to dress up every week and bring into work this positive outlook on my day brought me so much joy and happiness for the day ahead.

What do you like most about your job?

  • Being able to form bonds with staff members from across the world.
  • Being able to put a smile on campers’ faces every day of camp.
  • Smacos (a cross between s’mores and tacos) from outdoor cooking by far have been a staple item in my camp diet and will always be.

Favorite camp song?

By far my favorite camp song is also the first one I ever learned and this is “Little Red Wagon,” even when I blow my voice out part of the way through.

Are there elements of your favorite counselor that you try to emulate?

  • Outgoing
  • Not afraid to be silly or make mistakes
  • Trustworthy
