THE WALDY MALOUF KITCHEN RENEWAL PROJECT LAUNCHES

Chef Waldy Malouf has launched a fundraising campaign for the renovation of Green Chimneys' outdated kitchen.
BREWSTER, NY – (Jan. 17, 2008) – A New York City chef is launching a fundraising program to help Green Chimneys, an internationally renowned organization serving children with emotional, behavioral, social and learning challenges.  Waldy Malouf, chef and co-owner of Manhattan’s Beacon Restaurant (www.beaconnyc.com), announced today the introduction of The Waldy Malouf Kitchen Renewal Project.

The initiative will launch on Tuesday, Feb. 5 with the Beacon’s “Beefsteak Dinner” when $30 from every check will go toward the campaign.  To herald the program, a fiberglass steer -- painted by children at Green Chimneys --will be on display outside the midtown restaurant on Feb. 5.

“Green Chimneys has an antiquated kitchen sorely in need of an update,” said Malouf.  “We’ll start with about $9,000 from the Beefsteak to kick off the program and then we’ll donate a dollar per check for the remainder of the year.”

“We’re really excited about the launch of the kitchen renewal project,” says Joseph Whalen, executive director of Green Chimneys.  “Waldy has been a strong supporter of Green Chimneys for more than 15 years and we are thrilled with this campaign, which will encourage students to explore a new career path.  An upgraded kitchen will enhance a student’s vocational training opportunities and can PREPARE them for jobs in the hospitality industry.”

“I understand the importance of a functioning kitchen better than most people do,” said Malouf.  “I’ve been involved with Green Chimneys for more than 15 years and the culinary program, while not neglected, has not been an integral part of the school and education program.  With the development of a new kitchen, we should be able to do that and offer both therapeutic and educational opportunities to students, as well as future career training.”
