Youth Drop-In Center Promotes Positive Development

The Community Outreach Center is a safe and productive place for youth to interact with peers and participate in activities to promote positive youth development. Free after-school, evening and weekend activities, intervention and prevention programs, and counseling services are available to community youth ages 10-20. The Center also provides street outreach services for at-risk teens and weekly support/information groups for youth and parents.

Hours of Operation (Closed on Mondays)

Tuesday & Wednesday: 2:30 - 6pm  Ages 10-20
Thursday: 2:30 - 8pm; 6-8pm*  Age 14 and up only
Friday: 2:30 - 8pm*  Ages 14-20 only
Saturday: 11am - 4pm  Ages 10-20

*Pizza is served at Thursday and Friday evening programs.

After-School Drop-in Program
The after-school program offers structured activities, homework assistance, arts and crafts, community service projects and other indoor and outdoor activities, including games and special event activities. The program is designed to promote positive youth development in a safe place where youth can interact with peers, develop new skills, enhance their academic performance, become involved in positive recreational activities, and increase their community involvement through volunteer services. Daily on-site counseling and group activities are available as needed.

Street Outreach
An additional evening drop-in program for youth ages 14-20 is provided Thursdays 6-8pm and Fridays 2:30-8pm. The program offers individual, group and peer counseling, basic need assistance, assessments and referrals for mental health, substance abuse or health-related services in an environment that promotes safety, stability and positive youth development. Outreach workers also attend school and community activities/events to provide interactive presentations on a variety of topics to youth and other interested groups throughout Putnam County.

Group Meetings
Green Chimneys now offers 8-week psycho-educational group meetings to build continuity with youth and support their growth and development. To learn more about these weekly meetings or to sign up, email the Outreach Center or call 845.279.1467.

  • Career Readiness prepares youth ages 14-20 to take steps in attaining a job. The youth work with staff to learn how to write resumes and applications as well as build upon strengths to learn interview skills and how to prepare for a job in the future.
  • Panic Room helps youth ages 10-16 understand what anxiety is and how to effectively cope with negative emotions. Youth work with staff and utilize peer support to understand the roots of their anxiety, how it can affect them as well as how to cope in situations that causes anxiousness to arise.
  • Anger Management helps youth learn effective ways to express and manage their anger. The program addresses triggers, negative patterns of interaction, self-care, stress management and effective communication; all with the goal of reducing problematic behaviors and increasing self-esteem.
  • B.O.Y.S. allows boys ages 10-12 to focus on team work, relationships, self-esteem and social skills and ultimately enhance their growth as young men.
  • Girls Only! helps girls ages 10-16 learn about relationships, positive body image, and making healthy choices, in addition to building their self-esteem and growth as young women.
  • LGBTQ Alliance provides safe space for LGBTQ and allied youth and young adults ages 13-21 to build community and promote social justice through empowerment. This group explores the history of gender, male/female stereotypes, healthy relationships, community safety and internet safety.
  • Risk Takers Anonymous helps youth to identify the consequences associated with risky behaviors/decisions they may make. The program offers peer-to-peer support for making healthier decisions and finding ways to avoid conflict, and teaches the skills needed to make good choices in difficult situations.

Community Service Opportunities
Opportunities to complete required community service are available at the Outreach Center. Youth aged 14 and up can work as volunteers at the Center helping younger youth with homework, leading arts & crafts activities, teaching skills/hobbies or assisting staff with special projects. Social and recreational activities are offered along with the above groups.
