Parent and Tot Aquatics prepares young children (aged 6 months to 5 years) to become comfortable in and around the water so they are ready to learn to swim. The class gives parents information and techniques to help orient their children to the water and to supervise water activities in a safe manner.
These classes are offered twice per week allowing for regular repetition of new skills to help the young child learn. Sessions of eight or 16 classes are available.
American Red Cross Levels 1 to 4
Learn to Swim classes teach aquatic and safety skills in a logical progression. The skills learned include: water entry and exit; breath control and underwater swimming; buoyancy; changing direction and position; treading; swimming on front, back and side; general and personal water safety; and helping others.
Level 1, Introduction to Water Skills - The object of Level 1 is to help students feel comfortable
in the water and to enjoy the water safely.
Level 2, Fundamental Aquatic Skills - The object of Level 2 is to give students success with fundamental skills. Students learn to float without support and to recover to a vertical position. Students explore simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions on the front and back.
Level 3, Stroke Development - The object of Level 3 is to build on the skills in Level 2. Students learn to coordinate the front and back crawl. They are introduced to elements of the butterfly and to treading water. They learn rules for headfirst entries and learn to enter the water head first from the side of the pool (9 feet or deeper).
Level 4, Stroke Improvement - The object of Level 4 is to develop confidence in the strokes learned. The students improve their skills and increase their endurance by swimming familiar strokes (front & back crawl) for greater distance. The students continue to build on the butterfly and they are introduced to elementary backstroke, breaststroke, and elements of the sidestroke.
