In Loving Memory : Lillian Roode

A mentor to younger staff, Lillian Roode served in many capacities during her 29 years with Green Chimneys. Lillian, who championed the successful Adopt-an-Animal program, worked closely with Green Chimneys founder Dr. Samuel B. Ross Jr. to bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants from foundations. She managed the camp scholarship program, giving underprivileged children a chance to attend Hillside Camp. She also served as a resource for students over her nearly three decades with Green Chimneys, reading to them and building relationships. She was always there, ready to lend a helping hand for friends and colleagues in fund development and other departments.

Lillian made an indelible mark on so many lives with her passion for the Green Chimneys mission. In April 2003, she won the "Volunteer of the Year" award for her outstanding commitment to Green Chimneys and our children.

"It will be tough to fill her shoes," said Dr. Ross. "She will be missed."

Lillian is survived by her mother Virginia, daughter Dawn Roode Campanile, son TJ Roode, and grandsons Tanner Roode and Vittorio Campanile.  A memorial fund has been established in Lillian's name by The Friends of Green Chimneys. The family has designated Green Chimneys and the American Cancer Society as the selected charities for any donations. For those wishing to send condolences to Lillian's family, Green Chimneys will forward them.  You may write to them:
