Birds of Prey Day 2009 a Huge Success! PDF Print E-mail

The 17th annual “With Wings and a Prayer: Birds of Prey Day” held on Sunday, June 7 was another huge success for Green Chimneys of Brewster.  More than 4,500 visitors wandered among tents filled with raptors of all kinds and falconers from throughout the region.  While some guests went on foraging tours with “Wildman” Steve Brill, others had hands-on encounters with Bruce Louder’s amazing reptiles and still others viewed free-flying raptor demonstrations held by James Eyring of Pace Environmental Center and Brian Bradley of Skyhunters.

The highlight of the day was the stage show, featuring environmental attorney and mastor falconer, Bobby Kennedy Jr., Jim Fowler of Mutual of Omaha and Jonathan Wood of the Raptor Project.  Kennedy gave a stirring talk on energy conservation and the importance of reducing our carbon footprint.  Kennedy was followed by a surprise appearance by actor Richard Gere who read a letter written by a student to Dr. Samuel B. Ross, Green Chimneys’ founder.  Gere who was clearly moved by the organization’s mission and accomplishments later posed for a photo with a group of Green Chimneys social workers.

Following Gere, Jim Fowler and Bill Robinson gave their typically popular presentation complete with snapping turtle and a 12-foot albino python held by children from the audience.  Maggie Howell and Atka, a live wolf from the Wolf Conservation Center, made a brief but powerful appearance.  The show wrapped up with Jonathan Wood and his collection of eagles.  As a bald eagle, on display in front of the American flag, lifted one wing for the audience, Wood declared the bird’s conservative nature by exclaiming, “He’s right wing!”

“It was a perfect day,” said Dr. Ross, “We had beautiful weather, satisfied visitors and a star-studded show.”  Humans and animals alike seemed happy they’d come.  And Green Chimneys staff members are already planning for next year...
