Green Chimneys

A construction company in Thornwood, NY has completed the renovation of a centuries-old, historic barn at Green Chimneys. The building, at Boni-Bel Farm on Doansburg Road in Brewster, will be the new site of the Green Chimneys Country Store.

“Thanks to former Green Chimneys board member Jack DiGirolamo, vice president at C.W. Brown, CEO Renee Brown, president Charles W. Brown, and many of their employees, our oldest barn on campus has been beautifully renovated,” said executive director Joseph Whalen. “Because of their generous charitable giving and community service, a run-down barn has been transformed into an attractive and functional vocational country store -- and all while maintaining its unique, rustic character.”

C.W. Brown Inc. spent more than a month on the renovation project, adding windows, an entry door, concrete footings, new siding and flooring, and interior walls made with freshly milled recycled wood.

The newly refurbished barn will open Saturday, Nov. 29 when sales of holiday trees and garlands begin. Initially, the store, a vocational program of our school, will only be open on weekends for tree sales, but by April it will offer other items.

“With the closing of Organic Connections in Brewster, there is a demand in the area for healthy, organic produce,” said Whalen. “In addition to the farm stand sales at Boni-Bel Farm, we’ll also have a community supported agriculture program where our students can get valuable job training and the public can get fresh, natural and chemical-free produce.”
