HUMAN-ANIMAL-NATURE INTERACTION

Definitions

  • Animal-Assisted Activities (AAA)
    Animal-Assissed Activities provide opportunities for motivational, educational, recreational and/or therapeutic benefits to enhance the quality of life. AAAs are delivered in a variety of environments by a specially trained professional, paraprofessional, and/or volunteer in association with animals that meet specific criteria.

  • Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT)
    Animal-Assisted Therapy
    is a goal-directed intervention in which an animal that meets specific criteria is an integral part of the treatment process. AAT is directed and/or delivered by a health/human service professional with specialized expertise, and within the scope of practice of his/her profession. AAT is designed to promote improvement in human physical, social, emotional, and/or cognitive functioning. AAT is provided in a variety of settings, and may be group or individual in nature. This process is documented and evaluated.

  • Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy (EFP)
    Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy has as its goals the promotion of work with horses in the treatment of people with emotional, physical, behavioral, mental, social and/or spiritual needs. This describes the synergistic team of a certified therapeutic riding instructor working with a licensed or credentialed mental health professional. The therapy is designed to enhance self-awareness, to correct maladaptive behavior, to improve feelings and attitudes, to develop peer and adult relationships, to help eliminate feelings of depression and to work towards a general improvement in mental health

  • Equine Facilitated Experiential Learning
    Equine Experiential Learning is where the riding program is seen as a way for someone to learn about him/herself through the interaction and relationship with people, animals, nature and the environment.

  • Equine Assisted Activities (mounted or not)
    Equine assisted activities, mounted or not, are not therapy, but rather recreational and educational activities that can have therapeutic value.

  • Animal Assisted Education
    Animal assisted education (AAE) is a specilized application of AAA or AAT directed at students and classroom interactions.

  • Adventure Education
    Involves skill building through outdoor activities such as ropes courses, canoeing, caving, hiking, bicycling, climbing towers and all sorts of physical challenges.

  • Environmental/Outdoor/Ecology Education
    Provides a better understanding of the planet on which we live and creates for us an awakening of the role we must play in preserving and conserving all of the resources which are there for human, plant and animal life.

  • Hippotherapy
    Hippotherapy is a physical, occupational and speech therapy treatment strategy that utilizes equine movement. Hippotherapy is utilized as part of an integrated treatment program to achieve functional outcomes. In hippotherapy, the patient engages in activities on the horse that are enjoyable and challenging. Specific riding skills are not taught, but rather a foundation is established to improve neurological function and sensory processing. His foundation cen be generalized to a wide range of daily activities.

  • Horticulture Therapy
    A process utilizing plants and horticultural activities to improve the social, educational, psychological and physical adjustment of persons, thus improving their body, mind and spirit.
