For the second year in a row, Green Chimneys received a $5,000 grant from the Petco Foundation’s Helping Heroes in-store fundraising campaign in partnership with Natural Balance. This generous support recognizes the value of Green Chimneys Dog Interaction Program and has enabled us to grow and enhance it.

NEWS_Petco-Foundation_June-2015_logo.jpgThe Dog Interaction Program has been a great success since its launch in 2014. Under a professional trainer’s supervision, children with special needs help socialize shelter dogs, thus, improving their chances for adoption. During their 6-week training session, the canine “students” live on campus 24/7 and have frequent contact with our children and staff. The dogs visit classrooms and participate in individual and group therapy sessions all over campus.

And, the best part?

Everyone benefits! Our students gain a sense of responsibility and their self-esteem soars as the dogs progress. Their behavior, communications skills and emotional well-being improves as well. All of the 60 canine “graduates” have found forever homes. And, our entire campus enjoys having these special creatures here. As one social worker noted, “Staff and students are so happy to be welcomed with a wagging tail and someone who is excited to see them when they come in the morning.”

The Petco Foundation is dedicated to helping animals and people live their best lives together. The Dog Interaction Program does just that! We are truly grateful to the Petco Foundation for its continued support of this valuable program.
