NEWS_FBEN Tour Group_Sept2015.JPGGreen Chimneys recently participated in a multi-farm tour to share with and learn from fellow farm-based educators. Organized by the Farm-Based Education Network, the tour explored local farm sites to see how farm-based education centers are helping communities connect with the land, food, and each other. Discussions focused on information and issues around developing a strong mission, meeting your audience’s needs, financial models, customer experiences, safety, farming practices, staffing structures, programming and events.

The Green Chimneys tour featured all aspects of the farm – the teaching barn, the horse barn, the wildlife center, the Children’s Garden and Boni-Bel Farm – highlighting how farm, animal and horticulture activities (even mixing up a batch of fresh garden salsa!) are integrated into the therapeutic treatment programs for Green Chimneys’ 240 students with special needs.

Green Chimneys and tour participants were in good company with the host farm sites of Glynwood, Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture, Muscoot Farm, Hilltop Hanover Farm, Common Ground Farm, Manhattan Country School and Hawthorne Valley Farm.
